On the last weekend of November the Millbrook Stars Atom Rep team headed to Port Carling
for the Muskoka Rock tournament. With 4 games over 3 days this was a good
chance for the team to play lots of hockey and spend time having fun together.
The tournament started with a game on Friday night against a tough Embro Edge
team. The game started well for the team
with an early goal and a second near the end of the first period for a 2-0 lead
to Millbrook. After battling through a number of penalties in the second period
the team scored again in the last minute to extend their lead to 3-0. This
would remain the final score after a tight third period with both teams pushing
hard.
Saturday rolled around and the team headed back to the arena for two more games. With
the team focused on making the ‘A’ Championship final it was important to get a
good start and the team delivered. By playing a good all round team game, 6
different players scoring goals, the team beat Tweed Hawks 10-0. This setup a
virtual semi-final against a strong West Ferris Trappers team that had also won
both their games to date. Millbrook started strongly scoring a goal in the
first 90 seconds before the game settled down. They added a second goal midway
through the first period, then a third early in the second period. It was then that
West Ferris pushed back to score two quick goals to make it 3-2 midway through
the game. Millbrook fought back to add a fourth goal near the end of the period
to give themselves a cushion heading into the last period. The third was all
Millbrook, adding 3 more goals for a 7-2 win and a spot in the ‘A’ final.
Championship day arrived and an excited, but focused, team arrived to play in the ‘A’ final.
Awaiting them were the Ayr Flames who had also played well throughout the
weekend, proving hard to score on. It was a tight first period where both teams
had chances before Millbrook scored with 2 minutes to go. Determined not to let
the opposition come back this time the team played hard in the second period
and added 3 more goals for a good lead heading into the 3rd period. After
an early goal in the 3rd period the team was able to play out the rest
of the game and celebrate winning the trophy with a 5-0 win.
This capped an excellent weekend for the team with all players getting on the score sheet
and both goalies having shutouts. It’s a lot of fun watching this team play and
great to see how well the team gets on as a group. Thanks to everyone who
supported the team over the weekend.
